Remembering Frank Matero (1953-2025)

Frank Matero

I lost a true friend on December 19th. Frank Matero meant so much to so many— to the students and faculty at Penn’s Weitzman School of Design, where he taught for more than 30 years, and to the historic preservation community, which he served tirelessly throughout his career.

I met Frank in the earliest days of Cathedral Stone Products, in the early ’80s, when I was importing Jahn Mortars from Holland. Frank immediately understood why Jahn Mortars were different—and why they mattered for historic restoration. He was the first to specify Jahn, on Ellis Island.

We worked on many projects together over the years and he was always interested and helpful, and good company.

You will be missed, Frank.
